TV Review: New Girl

New Girl (2011) Poster

I literally picked this show at random. No recommendations. No biases. No idea what it was about. All I knew was that with “How I Met Your Mother” now dead (in so many senses of the word), I had a hole in my life for a comedy. The only other comedy I have at the moment if “Big Bang Theory” and while it’s awesome, it’s only on for half an hour a week. I need more laughs, but they’re hard to come by. I’m picky.

I found “New Girl” on a list of comedies available on Netflix Instant Viewing. I watched the first episode. I was … not laughing out loud but certainly amused and I saw potential. The premise is hard to describe, which may be why no advertisements for this show ever caught my attention. Jess is an oddball who just broke up with her long-time boyfriend and moves into a flat with three guys after answering their ad on the Internet for a roommate. I know, right? How is that going to be good? But Jess humiliated herself right there in the first scene and I found myself feeling a little sorry for her. And she’s just weird. There’s an intentional groan factor that goes along with her name. “Jess!”

I kept watching. After about five or six episodes, it became like an addiction. There are only a few laugh-out-loud moments, to be honest, but it is highly amusing and I like the outrageous cast of characters.

This is an adult comedy that contains sexual references in essentially ever episode.

If that’s okay with you, then I’m going to recommend this one. Give it a few episodes before you make up your mind … let it suck you in. See if it doesn’t become a strange addiction for you too.
