For those of you who don’t know, my husband and I are expecting our second child this May. This means that besides having books on my mind, I have babies on my mind. So you may get some extra baby posts in the near future.
I didn’t seriously consider cloth diapering for my son, who turned 2 this November. A friend of mine loaned me a few cloth diapers to try but I never really got into it. Lately, though, I’ve felt more compelled than usual to do my part for the environment. As much as I hated the idea of rinsing poop out of diapers and doing extra loads of laundry, I decided to experiment with cloth diapers. As the new baby isn’t here yet, I’m using my 2-year-old as the guinea pig.
I began last week by ordering 3 pocket diapers from fuzzi bunz. They arrived early this week and we got started.
For those who don’t know, there are a lot of choices in cloth diapers now. You don’t just wrap some fabric around your child’s bottom, fasten it with pins, and then change their entire outfit every time they pee. No — you get leak proof liners with diapers that fit inside, or pocket diapers with leak proof outsides and absorbent insides, or all in one diapers, which put the whole package together in one diaper that you just take off and throw in the wash.
Fuzzi Bunz is probaby the most popular, which is why I started there. I am also expecting some Dream-Eze all in one diapers.
I’ve decided not to go with the cheaper diapers that come in several layers that you put together as you choose. It’s too much for me to think about. :=)
I plan to have a full report on my cloth diaper experiment in the next week or two. For now, I’ll just say that my preliminary experience with these fancy new cloth diapers has been better than expected. They aren’t much more work than disposables. Unfortunately, my son’s volume of overnight pee (which is really pretty impressive and has tripped up most of the disposable diaper on the market) has so far gotten the better of the fuzzi bunz. I have suggestions for solutions in hand and will be trying them over the next few weeks.
I hate to do laundry with a passion. So I figure if cloth diapers are easy enough for me, they’re probably easy enough for almost anyone!
