{"id":90,"date":"2006-11-10T11:40:32","date_gmt":"2006-11-10T17:40:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christineamsden.com\/wordpress\/?p=90"},"modified":"2006-11-10T11:40:32","modified_gmt":"2006-11-10T17:40:32","slug":"happy-holidays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christineamsden.com\/wordpress\/?p=90","title":{"rendered":"Happy Holidays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"entry\">Last night on the news they said that Wal-Mart has decided to go back to saying, \u201cMerry Christmas\u201d and that they are changing their \u201cHoliday\u201d displays back to \u201cChristmas\u201d displays. I have exactly one question about this:<\/p>\n<p>Why is this news?<\/p>\n<p>Seriously, was it a slow news day or something? If so, I can think of some better filler.<\/p>\n<p>The last time I checked, this was a free country. People, and indeed stores, can offer any holiday greeting they choose. As long as it\u2019s not, \u201cBah, humbug!\u201d I\u2019m likely to respond positively. Since Christmas is just one day and the holiday season lasts from Thanksgiving to New Year\u2019s, I tend to offer people happy holidays, but that\u2019s just because I\u2019d like the entire season to be merry. It is, after all, a stressful time for many people. The suicide rate goes up around this time as many lonely people feel more isolatd than ever amidst the holiday cheer.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, I think it is high time we stopped arguing semantics and started trying to offer people real holiday cheer \u2014 especially to those who need it most.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last night on the news they said that Wal-Mart has decided to go back to saying, \u201cMerry Christmas\u201d and that they are changing their \u201cHoliday\u201d displays back to \u201cChristmas\u201d displays.
