As cosmic timing worked out, my parents were on vacation the day my novel came out, so they only had a chance to buy it this weekend. My mom, always the faster reader, got back to me Sunday with rave reviews, commenting on parts of the story in a way that only a mother can. \u201cMozzarella and parmesan!\u201d she said, \u201cYou put our family\u2019s lasagna recipe in your novel.\u201d<\/p>\n
So I had. It isn\u2019t exactly a pivotal part of the story, so you may only have noticed it if you are my mom, but I thought I would share with you my favorite lasagna recipe:<\/p>\n
SAUCE:
\n1 lb.\t\tGround chuck
\n1 lb.\t\tPork sausage
\n1 med.\t\tOnion
\n1~2 cloves\tGarlic<\/p>\n
Brown the above in olive oil\u2026 Add<\/p>\n
1 can\t\t(14. 5 oz.) Whole tomatoes
\n1 can\t\t(16 oz.) Stewed tomatoes
\n1 can\t\t(15 oz.) Tomato sauce special
\n1 can \t\t(6 oz.) Tomato paste
\n1 pkg.\t\tSpaghetti sauce mix
\n1 tsp.\t\tBasil
\n1\/2 tsp.\tOregano
\nSalt & pepper to taste
\n1\/4 tsp.\tGarlic powder
\n1\/4 tsp.\tOnion powder<\/p>\n
Simmer above for 20 minutes.<\/p>\n
1 lb. \t\tLasagna noodles cooked
\n3 cups\t\tMozzarella cheese
\n1&1\/2 cups\tParmesan cheese<\/p>\n
In a large (10 x 15 inch) baking dish layer as follows\u2026
\n1.\tSmall amount of sauce (so noodles don\u2019t stick)
\n2.\tNoodles
\n3.\tSauce
\n4.\tMozzarella cheese
\n5.\tParmesan cheese<\/p>\n
Repeat layers 2 thru 5 for a total of four layers. Bake covered at 350\u00b0 for 45 minutes.<\/p>\n
This recipe was given to my mom by my paternal grandmother (Sue Amsden) and she has made a few of her own adjustments over time.
