The sound of a snapping twig turned her attention, and the object of her thoughts stood a few feet from her, leaning against a huge tree with gnarled roots as if he had all the time in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI thought I managed to escape without anyone seeing me,\u201d she said in lieu of formal greeting.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI saw you leave just as my carriage was pulling into your driveway,\u201d he explained. \u201cWhy are you here alone?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Fletcher is giving a grand tour of our home to strangers, in hopes that they buy it.\u201d Her tone was acerbic.<\/span><\/p>\n

His gaze softened, but she thrust out her chin, daring him to offer her sympathy. She changed the subject, unable to dwell on the idea that her childhood home, one that had been in the family for generations, would be sold. \u201cTo what do I owe the pleasure of your company?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo proper?\u201d Gray asked, moving away from the tree and coming toward her.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI feel out of sorts today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Gray reached out to touch her cheek. \u201cI came to hand deliver an invitation to the masquerade.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOh.\u201d Her brown eyes dropped to his lips. Moving closer, he wrapped his arms around her. \u201cIs this your way of trying to distract me from my woes?\u201d she asked with a smile.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIs it working?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cToo soon to tell,\u201d she replied wickedly.<\/span><\/p>\n
